CARROLLTON -- They may have been battling the flu, but the Cartersville cross-country teams weren't going to miss Saturday's state championships.
The girls finished 18th with 499 points, while the boys finished 20th with 521 points.
For the girls, Lindsay Anderson (21:42) led the way in 49th place. Anna Ward (22:28) and Hannah Barnes (22:28) finished right next to each other in 78th and 79th places.
"They were separated by about a foot at the finish line," said Cartersville head coach David Matherne. "They were never more than a second apart the whole race. It was fun to watch those two."
Other finishers for the girls included Talitha Cherer (24:35) in 152nd place, Katerine Laco (25:06) in 158th place, and Kaitlyn Kinney (25:22) and Alex Everhart (26:00) in 164th and 169th places, respectively.
Johns Creek's Allie Buchalski won the individual title in 3-A as she ran the course in 18:28, which was the second fastest girls' time of the day. St. Pius X won the team title with 98 points, edging out Creekview (117) in second and Flowery Branch (120) in third.
On the boys' side, Zach Cravey (18:26) finished 86th, Juan Moreno (18:38) was 98th and Connor Layton (18:42) finished 102nd. Cameron Gilliland (18:45) finished 105th, Troy Hickom (19:28) was 142nd, Patrick Dowling (20:09) finished 175th and Hunter Myrick (20:43) finished 195th.
"Our seniors came up really big today," Matherne said. "Juan and Cameron ran good races. I was impressed with Connor. He's a first year runner and did really well."
The boys' race was won by Woodward Academy's Nathan Vassey in 15:35, which was the third fastest time of the day. Flowery Branch won its second straight boys' team title with 72 points, easily beating second place Eagles' Landing (137) and third place Creekview (148).
"It was a really competitive field," Matherne said. "I was proud of these kids and the way they performed. We had a tough week because the flu is running throughout the school and a lot of these kids had it.
"Considering that, I thought they did really well. These times are reflective on a lot of hard work."
