It took the Cartersville swimming team a full season last year to win a meet. Both squads took care of business in their first meet of the year as they swept Adairsville Tuesday in Adairsville.
The boys won 379-180, while the girls won 427-357.
"I wasn't sure how we would do," said Cartersville head coach Mindy Surrett. "We have a lot of new swimmers and this was our first meet of the year. Once we hit the water, all of my fears went away. Our kids swam really well."
In all 22 events, Cartersville took home first place.
The closest race of the evening was the Canes' Nick Haynes and the Tigers' Justin Harris in the 50-meter freestyle. In the end, Haynes edged Harris by .09 seconds. Haynes won the race with a time of 29.73. The 100-meter freestyle also saw a close finish as Cartersville's Ben Justice (1:14.22) beat Adairsville's Jay Potter (1:14.32) by one-tenth of a second.
On the girls' side, the closest race of the evening came when Cartersville's Meara Coy (32.90) beat Adairsville's Chelsea Ashley (33.30).
Both Cartersville 200-medley relay teams opened the meet with wins. The boys finished in 2:11.53, while the girls came in at 2:26.87. Colin Barber and Emily Williams (2:31.72) followed the relay wins up with individual wins in the 200-meter freestyle.
In the 200-meter individual medley, Luke Wachsmuth (2:49.99) and Stephanie Hayhurst (2:59.38) took home wins for the Canes, while Phillip Barber (1:12.36) and Kellie Clark (1:19.68) each won the 100-meter butterfly. In the girls' 100-meter freestyle, Hayhurst won easily with a time of 1:09.35.
The longest race of the night was the 500-meter freestyle. In a long race, the boys saw a close result. Cartersville's Phillip Barber (8:38.13) won by four seconds over Adairsville's Christian Reeves (8:42.99). Cartersville's Choloe Hobgood won the girls' race.
The Canes continued their dominance in the relay events as the boys won the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.58, while the girls won with a time of 2:16.07.
In the 100-meter backstroke, Cartersville's Luke Wachsmuth (1:26.02) outlasted Adairsville's Justin Harris (1:30.48) and Hobgood (1:16.84) won the girls' race over Adairsville's Erin Davis (1:31.55). The final individual event of the evening saw Collin Barber win the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:25.72, while Williams won on the girls' side with a time of 1:24.59.
The final event of the meet saw Cartersville's 400-meter freestyle relay team win with a time of 5:10.88, while the girls won with a time of 5:16.27.
"It was exciting, especially for the boys," Surrett said. "They had never won a meet outright before, so this is the first time they have done that. Last year, their win came as a combined win with the girls.
"The most exciting thing for us is that we still have some swimmers who haven't come out yet due to football, cross-country or cheerleading. We'll get those kids next week and we'll be even better."
Cartersville will be back in action Thursday at Dalton.
