Suspect arrested in series of snatch-and-grab robberies

The man suspected of hitting a series of convenience stores in the area within the last few weeks was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Bartow County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Jeffery Hughes, 54, of Falcon Circle, about 3 p.m. after they located him and a female walking along Grassdale Road.
Hughes allegedly matches the description of a man behind at least four snatch-and-grab robberies in Cartersville and Acworth this month.

On Sept. 5, an older white male with a mustache took cash from the register drawer at the Circle K, 1325 E. Main St., Cartersville. Later the same day, a man matching the same description pretended to purchase a can of beer from the Kangaroo, 5646 Highway 20, before snatching cash from the register drawer.

A white male on Monday used the ruse of buying candy before taking money from the cash register at the Texaco on Old Grassdale Road.

“He got less than $20 [at the Texaco]. I think he got a little bit more at the Kangaroo,” BCSO Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said.

Because there was no vehicle description from Monday’s robbery, Rogers said investigators believed he had walked to the store from a nearby residence.

An employee of Texaco positively identified Hughes Thursday. He also matches surveillance photos recovered from the Kangaroo location.

Acworth Police Department will investigate whether Hughes may be behind a snatch-and-grab at a CVS location inside the city, Rogers said.
