City receives $1.8 million grant

The Cartersville Bartow Airport Authority will receive $1.8 million in funding assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for construction around the airport, the city council learned Thursday night. The grant will help pay for a storm drainage system and a bridge to accommodate the Old Alabama Road realignment. The grant, which is eligible for a $100,000 match from the state, must also be matched locally with another $100,000.

The Old Alabama realignment, which was completed in 2014, was required by the FAA to create a minimum safety distance between the end of the runway and State Road 61. The airport had been previously grandfathered, but a new FAA mandate called for a minimum safety distance past the established runway that was free of obstacles and structures.

According to a letter from Carol Comer, director of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s intermodal division, the project should be ready for contract in December.

The council also approved $60,730 to replace the existing sewer between West Avenue and Herring Street. Marietta civil engineering firm Rindt-McDuff Associates will oversee the project from engineering through construction.

In other business, the council:
• Approved annexation and rezoning of two properties — 918 Jones Mill Road and 19 and 27 Johnson Lane — and rezoning for 1009 N. Tennessee St.

• Changed the time for the December meeting to 8 a.m. for the work session and 9 a.m. for the regular meeting to accommodate the annual Christmas parade to be held that night.

• Approved $9,940 to replace body armor for Cartersville police officers.

• Approved $57,276.30 to Prater Ford in Calhoun for the purchase of two vans.

• Approved the sale of a 1990 American Eagle fire truck, which had served as a training vehicle for the last four years, to the Haralson County Fire Department for $7,500.

The Cartersville City Council will hold a work session on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m. at city hall.
