Traffic stop leads to heroin bust

A be-on-the-lookout issued by Cartersville Police Department on Monday led to the arrests of six individuals, five of them on drug charges.

Following a burglary report at 101 Arrowhead Drive, Cartersville police issued a lookout for a suspect’s vehicle, which was spotted Tuesday morning by an off-duty patrol officer.

An on-duty officer stopped the vehicle on Cassville Road, where a search of the vehicle turned up stolen property from two separate burglaries in Cartersville. Multiple syringes consistent with heroin use also were located.

The driver, Dustin Yockachonis, was arrested and charged with burglary after he admitted to entering the homes to “fund his drug addiction,” according to a CPD release.
Because of the drug connection, the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force was called in and surveillance was established at several suspected drug distribution points.

At 67 Jordan Road, an officer recognized Wesley Kenneth Woods, also known as “Twin,” standing in the yard. It was confirmed Woods had a warrant for probation violation on a previous drug charge.

When officers approached the house, Woods attempted to flee. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were observed in plain view.

After securing a search warrant, officers located about 2 ounces of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, a small amount of hash oil and additional stolen property.

DTF Commander Capt. Mark Mayton said the amount of heroin taken Tuesday, valued at $9,000, was a significant seizure. Four grams constitutes a trafficking amount, with Tuesday’s find totaling roughly 55 grams.

“We have seen an increase in the use and distribution of heroin because of the aggressive enforcement actions we took against prescription drug diversion, specifically the pill mills,” Mayton said.

Arrested were Yockachonis, who is charged with two counts of burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and possession of heroin; Alicia Long, 29, possession of cocaine and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana; Brittany Thompson, 29, trafficking heroin, possession of marijuana less than an ounce; Devante Mitchell, 21, warrant through Cartersville; Antoine Morrow, 28, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana less than an ounce; and Woods, 34, trafficking heroin, possession of marijuana less than an ounce, theft by receiving stolen property.

Additional stolen property pawned in Acworth also was recovered and returned to the owners. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests possible.
