Suspect identified in fatal officer-involved shooting

The suspect shot and killed by an Emerson police officer Wednesday was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Thursday as Brent Andrew Brannon, 27.

GBI Spokesperson Scott Dutton said in a release that the Emerson officer was working traffic enforcement on Interstate 75 just before 11 a.m. when he was alerted to a tag violation on a gold SUV traveling northbound.

The officer stopped Brannon, of Columbus, just north of exit 288. A license check revealed Brannon was wanted on outstanding warrants for trafficking heroin, possession of a sawed-off rifle, sale of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia through the Columbus Police Department. The report indicated Brannon should be considered armed and dangerous, and was an escape risk. At that time, the officer requested backup.

Before backup arrived, Brannon became non-compliant and the officer deployed his Taser, which was ineffective. When Brannon pointed a gun at the officer, the officer fired at Brannon, striking and killing him.

The incident was captured on the officer’s dash cam video.

An autopsy is scheduled for today at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur.

Once the GBI concludes its investigation, the case will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for any action it deems appropriate.
