Bartow County Sheriff’s Office personnel will be the latest agency to sport beards for a good cause.
The law enforcement agency is the third to allow officers to grow facial hair in return for donations to Shop With A Hero, a December program that takes underprivileged children shopping with a local hero.
“I decided to join my brothers at Cartersville and Adairsville for a worthy cause, and give the guys an incentive,” Sheriff Clark Millsap said. “They raised a significant amount last year, and we want to combine our efforts to bring in as much as possible.”
Launched Wednesday, BCSO deputies can pay $25 a month — $50 total — to Shop With A Hero and will be allowed to keep “neatly groomed” beards through Dec. 31.
“It may have a lot of gray in it, but I will be growing my beard as well,” Millsap said.
Although female deputies can’t sport a beard, Millsap encouraged everyone to participate in some way.
“We need all the volunteers that we can get on Dec. 19 so that each child participant has their own hero to shop with,” he said in a department release. “I am asking that if you participate in Grow A Beard For Shop With A Hero then please join us in December to shop with the kids.”
More than $45,000 is needed to take an estimated 300 children shopping at Wal-Mart after a breakfast with Santa. Each child is allotted $100 to spend on clothing for themselves and $50 to spend as they choose.
