Details were released Friday in a fatal Thursday morning crash that killed a Taylorsville man.
Jody Rene Overby, 41, of Taylorsville, was driving a 2006 Dodge Ram southbound on Interstate 75 north of exit 293 when he traveled into the left lane, side-swiping a 2002 Ford Expedition driven by 39-year-old Velvet May Tucker of South Carolina, according to the Georgia State Patrol report. Overby’s truck then traveled behind the Expedition, striking it a second time.
The impact sent the Expedition into the median, where it came to rest in the inside northbound emergency lane. Overby lost control, traveling through the median and overturning before entering I-75 northbound near mile marker 294.
Overby’s vehicle entered the path of a northbound HD Edgar Trucking tractor-trailer. The truck driver applied his brakes and steered to the right in an attempt to avoid Overby’s vehicle. The overturning pickup struck the tractor-trailer in the front as it was rolling. Overby’s truck came to rest off the shoulder of the interstate.
A 7 Hills Transport tractor-trailer was hit by debris from the impact between Overby’s truck and the HD Edgar tractor-trailer.
Overby was deceased at the scene. Tucker and her three passengers were uninjured, as were both truck drivers.
Facebook scam costs woman almost $5,000
A man reportedly targeting women through social media took a Cartersville woman for almost $5,000.
According to the report, the 46-year-old woman told Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputies she met the man through Facebook. He told her he was working in Iraq and needed her to wire him money through Western Union for him to get home. In return, he said he would deposit checks in her bank account paying her back for the amount he needed.
She told deputies she wired about $4,780 to the man, and he had deposited five checks totaling $12,001.74. Her bank, however, notified her the checks were not valid and froze her account.
The woman said she does not believe the man used his real name, and after researching him, she discovered the same incident has happened numerous times to females by a man using the same name.
