With the collaboration referred to as a “natural partnership,” the Euharlee Welcome Center and History Museum is teaming up with the Woodland Middle School at Euharlee art program to present the venue’s first temporary exhibit. Titled “Welcome to Art @ Euharlee,” the show opens today with a public reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the EWHM.

“This is our first temporary exhibit of any kind at the Euharlee Welcome Center and History Museum,” said EWHM Director Katie Gobbi. “We plan to offer regular temporary exhibits, including art shows, local history exhibits and hopefully some traveling exhibits in the future. We’re excited to have the ability to provide our community and visitors with new exhibits and programs to enjoy. This particular exhibit came about after meeting [WMSE’s art teacher] Mrs. [Abby] Hennington and learning about her passion and her students’ talent. This is another opportunity for the students to display their art and feel encouraged by the community. Once Mrs. Hennington heard about it, she jumped at the chance.

“... It feels like a natural partnership for a few reasons. First, we’re practically neighbors. Second, at the Euharlee Welcome Center and History Museum, we are trying to support and engage our local residents however we can. By providing a place for the students and families at Woodland Middle School at Euharlee to visit and plug into, we hope to foster a broader sense of community for us all.”

On display through February 2016, “Welcome to Art @ Euharlee” will highlight the creations of Woodland Middle School’s students and Art Club members.

“Having the opportunity to display artwork in our community is an honor for Woodland Middle School,” Hennington said. “The Euharlee Welcome Center and History Museum has taken it to the next level by offering us such a lovely space and showcasing the work from our school in such a formal way. The kids are thrilled.

“We chose to focus on historical buildings in Euharlee for our linear perspective study, in honor of the local historical society. This display is really the centerpiece of our show. I love to see the students, with their parents and relatives, explaining why their art was chosen for the show and what they learned. Our Art Club is also excited to unveil our huge ‘Mona Lisa’ painting. It has been a yearlong effort, and they can’t wait to show her off. Our head custodian, Mr. [Steve] Laird, is framing the piece especially for the show.”

Along with viewing the artwork, Gobbi encourages visitors to donate gently-used materials and supplies for the school’s art program. The needed items, which are posted on euharleehistory.org, will be collected tonight at the reception and throughout the full span of the exhibit.

Located at 33 Covered Bridge Road in Euharlee, EWHM is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. There are no general admission fees.
