Two accidents — a two-vehicle crash at U.S. Highway 411 at Shaw Plant No. 15 and a pedestrian struck by a train at Felton Road and the CSX railroad tracks — Sunday evening resulted in two fatalities.
When Bartow County Emergency Medical Service crews arrived at the Felton Road scene, they began searching for a man that witnesses said was struck by a CSX freight train. His body was found near the tracks.
Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton said the man died of closed head injuries probably caused by a glancing blow from the train. Authorities are speculating the man may have come from a homeless camp near the scene and attempts to contact next-of-kin have been unsuccessful.
Later, one person died at the scene and another five were injured in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 411 near Shaw Plant No. 15. The Georgia State Patrol said the crash occurred around 9:23 p.m. when a 2006 Nissan Altima traveling north on Old Gilliam Springs Road failed to stop for a stop sign and entered the roadway in the path of a Toyota 4Runner, traveling east on US. Highway 411.
Amber Diana Coker, 17, the driver of the Nissan and passenger Brice Henderson, 20, both of Cartersville, were airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center with critical injuries. Another passenger, Dustin Antwain Johnson, 20, of Cartersville was transported by ambulance to Floyd Medical Center with numerous trauma injuries.
The fourth passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name will be released once next of kin have been notified.
William Michael Murphy, 57, of Cartersville, the driver of the 4Runner and his passenger, Valdilene Murphy, 60, of Cartersville were transported to Cartersville Medical Center with minor injuries.
Charges are pending following the completion of an investigation by the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
