In its second game of the season, the Cartersville softball team once again managed to keep its opponent from exploding offensively but an error-filled inning felled the Lady Purple Hurricanes as they lost, 5-4, to Hiram Monday in the Marietta Blue Devil Invitational.

"[We had] one bad inning again," Cartersville coach Rick Holsomback said. "[We had] four errors in one inning."

The Lady Canes led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Lady Hornets went ahead 3-2 in the top of the second. Hiram added runs in the fourth and fifth for a three-run lead.

However, Cartersville rallied much like it did in its season opener last Tuesday against Cedartown.

"We were down 5-2 and came back. We had the tying run at second base," said Holsomback, whose team scored two runs in the fifth. "It was better than the first game, but still we need to stay away from that bad inning."

"I just think more focus [is needed] during the game," he continued. "We did a better job of sticking to our game plan today. We hit the ball harder today. ... The thing I'll take away the most from this game is we did not give up. Overall, we're pleased."

The Lady Canes, who had eight hits in their home opener, continued to flex an improved offense, adding 11 hits against the Lady Hornets -- which included a three-RBI performance from Mallory Jackson.

Cartersville (0-2) continues its play in the tournament at Marietta High with today's 6 p.m. contest against Chattahoochee. The Lady Canes also play Wednesday against Pace Academy in a game that begins at 4:30 p.m.
