Incumbent mayor Kathy Foulk and councilperson Sammy Cardin lost their bids to retain their seats in the November elections— Foulk by only seven votes.
“Before we start tonight’s meeting,” Foulk said. “There is a couple, Tina and Henry Floyd, that live here in Euharlee who have always been great partners with the city. They have pitched in on community projects, from trenching the ballfields in Osborne Park, to planting grass in public areas, to helping clean up the black cemetery. Every city employee knows that if you need something all you have to do is make a phone call and say, ‘Mr Henry, would you bring out a wagon of hay? Or Mr. Henry, would you bring over your tractor or whatever.’ In recognition of their service to this community, we want to name ballfield No. 2 at Joe Cowan Park, Floyd Field.”
After failing to hear any questions or objections during the second reading, council approved the 2014 budget unanimously. The amount — $1,761,513 — is a 13-percent increase from last year.
In other business, the council:
• approved the 2014 dates for Euharlee’s two festivals — June 5-7 for the barbecue cook-off and Oct. 17-19 for the Fall Festival.
• approved an amendment to the 2013 budget.
Euharlee City Council will meet for a work session on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.
