“It’s great to see the success that once was here (at Cartersville) for many years,” said Matherne of the Purple Hurricanes’ top-five finish in the Class A/AA/AAA boys’ division at the event, held at Berry College. “People were wondering if we were for real after winning the Pickens Preview that was held right before Labor Day. I feel that we are after today’s performance.”
According to Matherne, the boys’ Purple Hurricanes’ cross-country team was a top-10 state finisher for 19 straight years prior to 2005. That’s along with being state AA champs in 2000 and 2001.
“This is one of the best team’s I’ve coached in quite a while,” he said.
Cartersville placed fifth out of 37 teams participating in their division with 221 points, finishing behind North Hall, 61; Chiles, Fla., 75; Westminster, 157; and Chapel Hill, 195. The team’s top individual was Rogelio Herrera, who placed 12th overall, with a time of 17:18. Other individual finishers for the Purple Hurricanes were Lawson Crowe, 18:02; Troy Hickom, 18:10; Tommy Morrison, 18:39; Caeleb Jenkins, 19:14; Ethan Alexander, 20:15; Evan Cole, 20:45; Daniel Nally, 20:49; Noah Harper, 21:14; Jake Andersen, 21:36.
For the Cartersville’s girls’ cross country team, Allie Caughman was the team’s top finisher with a time of 24:16. She was followed by Bree Cole, 24:28; Destiny Tate, 25:38; Edith Milian, 26:09, Toria Simes, 26:32; Victoria Everhart, 26:40; Victoria Hickom, 26:40; Elyse Hoganson, 27:04; Emma Robinson, 27:05; and Diana Perdomo, 27:09.
In other results, Woodland’s boys’ cross country team finished 27th overall in Class AAAA/AAAAA. Logan Rempe, with a time of 18:42, was the Wildcats’ top individual finisher. The Lady Wildcats’ cross country team placed 25th overall. Top individual finishers were Ashley Barrera, 22:12; and Catie Camron, 23:42
