The season has not been without its bumps for the Cass volleyball team, but after a pair of wins in the Area 6-AAAA tournament, which is being held at the Lady Colonels’ home gym, it may have been all worth it.

Cass defeated Cedartown (25-16, 25-14) and Washington (25-7, 25-13) in two sets, with the latter victory sending the Lady Colonels to the state playoffs for the first time in about five years, coach Jamie Horton said.

“It’s always good for the kids. We’ve had a lot of ups and downs [this year],” added Horton, whose team lost six or seven players from the 2011 team. “We had a lot of inexperienced girls, but [during] the last three weeks, we kind of turned the corner.”

Horton credited two players — seniors Amber Bowen and Brooklyn Whitener — with paving the way for the team’s turnaround.

“Amber Bowen’s really stepped up from a leadership standpoint. She’s kind of put the team on her shoulders,” Horton said of Bowen, who has pulled teammates to side when needed.

As for Whitener, the coach noted she has led the team from a skills standpoint, particularly in terms of racking up kills.
