Cartersville’s Katie O’Connor has been named to the 2012 Class AAA All-State Volleyball Team.

O’Connor was the leader of the Lady Purple Hurricanes this season, helping them to the Sweet 16 round of the Class AAA state tournament.

Cartersville (25-15 overall and 8-5 in Area 4-AAA) was defeated by Blessed Trinity, which went on to win the Class AAA state championship.

O’Connor, a 6-1 middle hitter, was a top performer at the state level due to her play for Cartersville.

She ranked 15th in the state for hitting percentage and eighth in Class AAA; 17th in the state in kill percentage and fourth in Class AAA; 17th in the state and third in Class AAA for aces; third in the state for blocks and 23rd in the state in Class AAA for digs.

Overall, she had 344 kills (44.8 kill percentage), 97 aces (25.8 ace percentage, 84.8 serve percentage), 159 blocks, 138 digs and four assists.

Coach Camille Spradley said the state volleyball honor also recognizes the play of her team in the sport as well as her individual accomplishments.

“I think it speaks volumes for where Cartersville volleyball is heading,” Spradley said. “We are being more competitive and our players are taking their game more seriously. They’re doing things this offseason to help their play next year. They’ve already set their goals for next season.”
