Two Cartersville Purple Hurricanes have been named to the Region 5-AAA All-Star Softball Team.

Annalyn Yantis has been named to the region’s first team all-star team while Kennedy Bailey was included as a member of the all-region second team.

Coach Rick Holsomback praised the selections.

“These girls work hard, especially in the offseason, and take lessons from the best coaches around,” he said. “Having two players named to the region team shows we’re heading in the right direction in our efforts to develop outstanding softball players. We hope our younger players take note of this success and apply that same work ethic to help their game.”

He said the Lady Canes don’t just work during the softball season. “We worked out lifting weights and running in the offseason. Some of our girls are working on their own and have bought into our program. They’ve gotten a taste of what it's like and want more.”

The coach said Yantis is a good selection because she is a strong offensive contributor as well as a good pitcher.

“She hit .429 for us, which is phenomenal,” he said. “She started out well and I had to keep moving her up [in the batting order] because of her production.

“Her pitching was great. She battled through some back issues and we beat some teams that were pretty good. We lost a lot of close games, but she never quit.”

Holsomback said as a pitcher, she was very aggressive with what he termed “a bulldog mentality.”

“She’s developed a great mound presence. The relationship between her and Kennedy developed throughout the year and that's important. The pitcher and the catcher are the only ones to touch the ball every play.”

He also said Bailey played an important role in the team’s offensive attack, too.

“She’s a professional,” he said. “She battled close to hitting almost .400 most of the year [finishing at .352] and led the team in RBIs [21]. She is probably our best two-strike hitter.

“She had some big time RBIs for us, some clutch RBIs and all of those things together amounted to a great season for a freshman.”
