John and Brandi Underwood, who had served at the Cartersville station since its revival in 2010, officially took control of the station this week along with partner Greg Detscher.
“We’re extremely excited,” John Underwood said. “This is something we’ve really worked hard toward, especially in the last couple of months.
“Brandi and I hadn’t been married long when we started at the station. She started out as an assistant and I was really just doing odd-end jobs around here. Then I started helping with sales and she took more of an on-air role. From there, I went into sports and sales and she became assistant general manager.”
Negotiations for the change began in October after previous station owner Tommy Young approached the Underwoods about purchasing the station.
“Tommy asked if we’d be interested in purchasing it, we said yes and it just sort of went from there,” Underwood said. “We look forward to being able to have the freedom to do things differently, whether it be in programming or community involvement. A lot of things the station has been doing in the community has been because Brandi and I pushed for it.
“We’ll be trying to change the image of the station to more of a community-oriented radio station. Brandi and I tried to do that before we were owners, but now we’ll be able to do that in a broader way.”
The Underwoods also hope to reach a wider listening audience across the station’s coverage area, which includes all or parts of 16 counties. In doing this, however, the new owners look to use the station as a tool for attracting visitors to Bartow County and for raising awareness for local nonprofits.
As for programming, the station will continue with syndicated content through the end of the year before launching a new line of live shows. The Underwoods plan to place a new emphasis on local news and sports throughout the day and will welcome back former WYXC personality Jim Adams for an after-work program from 4 to 7 p.m.
“I am very excited about working with John and Brandi,” Adams said. “They were working really hard at the station when we all tried to make it go a couple of years ago.
“I watched their dedication. A lot of the things they did at the station they did for free to try to make that station a success and I am tickled to death they are taking over, because the station needed someone who was dedicated to the station and I can’t think of two better people.”
For Adams, the Underwoods are more than just former co-workers. In April 2011 when a tornado destroyed Adams’ home and injured his mother, it was John and Brandi Underwood that came to help.
“The special thing about John and Brandi — and I don’t mind talking to people about it,” Adams said. “Was the night we got hit with the tornado, John and Brandi actually found a way to get out there and get my mom and I out from our house when it got destroyed. It was amazing what they did. They literally hiked close to a mile and a half over trees and debris to get to us with a paramedic because my mom was injured.
“So those two have always been close to my heart. They were the true heros of that night.”
The new owners are now looking for feedback from listeners and prospective listeners. The Underwoods and their partner, Detscher, are seeking comments and suggestions about the station’s direction. Comments can be made via email at email@example.com.
