Catie Heilman tried out in March for the high performance program with the USA Volleyball Association, her mother, Camy Heilman, said.
Heilman said 675 girls tried out in locations across the country in her age group. Each girl had to specify what position she would be playing. A total of 128 girls nationwide made it in her age group and 48 will attend as an outside hitter, including her daughter, she said.
The official name of the program is “2013 Future Select National Training Program.”
The group will train in early July for a week in Edmond, Okla., at an Olympic training facility by USA coaches on techniques in their particular position and about international play.
Camy Heilman said her daughter’s age group does not compete in any way, but the next levels up do. She said there are no competitive programs for her age groups but there are training programs. T
The program is considered a pipeline for girls whi might wish to be considered for USA national volleyball teams and Junior Olympics.
“Catie currently plays on a club volleyball team based out of Kennesaw called ‘Volley One,’” she said.
Heilman said Catie is on the 13 Nike team, where she is team captain, and has led the team to receive a bid to the national tournament in Dallas, TX, in late June. She said it is the first team to ever receive a bid at “Volley One.”
