Five Cartersville Country Club golfers are competing in the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship being held in Valdosta this weekend.
The delegation includes Chase Jones, Scott Davenport, Mike Granato, Chris Hall and Tim Spurgeon.
The event takes place Friday through Sunday with 18 holes of stroke play each day. The field of 144 will be cut to the low 70s and ties after 36 holes.
Jones, who took his college game to Georgia Southern University, said he tries to compete in several golfing events each year in Georgia.
He said last year he finished in the top 10 in the mid-amateur, which is played annually at different venues around the state.
Jones said he's always liked golf and matching his game against others.
"It's more for stature, but it also helps you get points," he said. "As you accumulate points, you may have a chance to play in a couple of team events at the end of the year."
He said it's also just second nature to golfers to want to compete.
"These are some of the top amateurs in the state and most golfers have played competitive golf a long time," he said. "This is a way to still compete at a high level. It's just one of those things. If you'd played at a high level, you want to continue competing that way."
All five golfers at the local country club play pretty competitively.
Six 18-hole qualifiers were held for the tournament across Georgia from April 14-21. The lowest qualifying score was turned in from Granato of White. Granato turned in a score of 69 at Orchard Hills Gold Club in Savannah.
The local delegation includes golfers who live in neighboring counties.
Davenport and Spurgeon are from Marietta while Hall is from Kennesaw.
"We are very blessed we have a number of good golfers here," Jones said.
Entries were open to male amateur golfers age 25 or older as of May 20, who belong to a GSGA member club. A total of 276 players entered this year's championship -- 23 exempt and 253 non-exempt.
Non-exempt players competed in one of six statewide qualifiers held in April for the remaining 101 spots in the field.
