The 72,000-square-foot sports and outdoor recreation store will land in Cartersville Crossing at Main Street and U.S. Highway 41 where the former Kmart building currently stands.
“We are coming to Cartersville,” said Academy Sports + Outdoors Spokesperson Eric Herrera. “The store will be approximately 72,000 square feet and we will be bringing about 150 new jobs with that store.”
With the Cartersville Kmart shutting its doors in January, the anchor spot at Cartersville Crossing shopping center has remained vacant, but plans to make way for Academy will change the area’s look and make room for new tenants.
The former home of Kmart will be demolished along with some of the adjoining spaces. Current tenants will be relocated and leases will be renewed as two new buildings are built to accommodate Academy and another national retailer yet to be announced. The remaining shops will remain in their current location.
H&H Realty Broker Mark Harris closed the deal with Academy and looks forward to renovating the Cartersville Crossing shopping center.
“They’ll tear the old Kmart down and build a new building there. It’s investment for the community and jobs as well,” Harris said. “That’s what we’re more proud of than anything is getting the jobs.
“It will be a significant improvement for that corner and we are negotiating with at least three other national tenants to retrofit and rebuild space in the rest of the shopping center for them.”
Academy Sports + Outdoors does not yet have a projected opening for the Cartersville location, but Harris expects construction to be completed in early 2014.
Operating 162 stores in 13 states, Academy Sports + Outdoors is one of the nation’s largest sports retailers, exceeding $3.5 billion in annual sales.
