Jones has served as interim chief since late June following the retirement of Chief Charles Stafford. An official announcement of his final candidacy and nomination for chief came at the Tuesday night Adairsville city council work session.
Jones delivered the monthly police report, saying that officers have undergone more training in various areas including instruction on detecting DUIs and gaining radar certification for traffic control.
The finance report, delivered by Roger Freeman, showed the city is currently operating under budget. "That's because there are several projects that haven't been started yet," Freeman said.
Among other council news, City Manager Pat Crook noted that replacement water lines are needed along Elm and Cass streets. "Some of those lines were put in during the 1920s and 40s when those houses were built," added Mayor Evan King, agreeing with the need for a council discussion and approval for construction quotes. One Elm Street resident new to Adairsville said that water pressure in the area is low and the pipes leak into the street.
After no candidates stepped forward to run for the open seats of mayor and council members in the November election, the council will vote to approve a resolution that no election will be necessary as no candidates qualified for open positions.
Proposals for lawn maintenance and quotes to paint the Depot were placed before the council as well. After discussion, the council agreed to vote on bids from Four Seasons in Cartersville on a bi-weekly lawn maintenance schedule or weekly, as needed depending upon the season and rainfall amounts. Maintenance includes mowing, weeding, mulching twice a year, and shrubbery trimming. Planting is not included in the contract.
Concerning the Depot, King told the council he feels that the building "needs a good coat of paint [for preservation]."
In a bit of good news, the council discussed lifting a hiring freeze that was put into place in 2008 in order to fill vacant positions. This lift does not allow the hiring of additional personnel, but replacements will be added in vacant positions in order for departments to function adequately.
