With the announcement of Buffets Inc. closing shop at 81 restaurants, the Cartersville Ryan's Buffet joined another local eatery closed just weeks earlier -- Greg's Tavern.

The locally owned, downtown bar and grill closed its doors at the end of December. Greg's Tavern, 120 S. Erwin St. in Cartersville, was located just off Main Street in the historic downtown district.

"He had wonderful food, one of the best hamburgers in town, always had great soup and salad lunch specials -- and he will definitely be missed," said Liz Hood, executive director of the Cartersville Downtown Development Authority.

Closing up for the last time Thursday, the Cartersville Ryan's, 823 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, was shuttered in the bankruptcy process of parent company Buffets Inc. Also holding Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet and Fire Mountain, Buffets Inc. employs about 28,000 people.

When contacted Friday, an employee at the Cartersville Ryan's said, "We cannot discuss [the closing]."

The most recent data from the Georgia Department of Labor showed the retail food and beverage industry lost about 400 jobs statewide between November and December 2011. With 82,200 employed in the industry in December 2011, retail food and beverage service remained relatively unchanged from the prior year with 82,000 workers employed in December 2010.
