Qualifying purchases on Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10, will be exempt from state sales tax. Items included in the exemption are school supplies, clothing, shoes and computers.
“The 2013 sales tax holiday represents an excellent opportunity for parents to save money on basic necessities when getting their children ready for the upcoming shool year in Georgia,” said Georgia Department of Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie.
Clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax, along with single purchases of $1,000 or less of personal computers and computer-related accessories. General school supplies with a sales price of $20 or less per item also will be exempt from sales tax during the tax holiday.
Tax-free holidays often are not only a boon for shoppers, but for business owners as well. Lisa Hamilton, owner of Blue Sky Outfitter and EVOLUTION, sees the impact it makes on family budgets and other small businesses. Because of the economic conditions continuing to linger across the state and the nation, Hamilton was glad to see that the state legislature approved this year’s tax holidays.
”Blue Sky Outfitter is delighted Georgia is participating in the tax-free weekend this year,” Hamilton said in an email to The Daily Tribune News. “All children need backpacks for the school season and we’re glad when they visit Blue Sky, in either Cartersville or Rome, they are able to save on this purchase as well as on jackets and clothing.
“I am glad our elected officials recognize the needs of their constituents and have chosen to implement the tax free weekend once again. It will not only have a positive economic impact on our community, but it is also fun way to kick off the ‘back-to-school’ season and get everyone excited about the year to come.”
This year’s tax holiday, however, falls after local schools resume. For both Cartersville City and Bartow County schools, class starts on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and Excel Christian Academy returns on Thursday, Aug. 8.
