Bartow 8-and-Under All-Stars wins District 5

The Bartow County Parks and Recreation 8-and-Under girls All-Stars defeated Calhoun 31-12 to win the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s District 5 title.

With the win, Bartow’s 8-and-Under all-stars will play a yet to be determined opponent in the GRPA state tournament Friday in Griffin beginning at 9:15 p.m.

The Bartow team won all four of its district tournament games in convincing fashion.

In the championship game against Calhoun, the 8-and-under all-stars were led by Lehla Thomas’ game-high 22 points. Thomas scored 16 points in the all-stars’ 23-9 win over Floyd County in the semifinals, and 16 points in their 21-4 win over Gordon County in the quarterfinals. She scored 27 points in her team’s opening 31-16 win over Murray County.

Scoring at least one basket against Calhoun were Amaya Ford and Jessica Ryan. Makayla Wade and Ford each had two points and Mikela Jackson made her free throw in the Gordon County win. Ford had four points and Ryan three against Floyd County. It was Haley Stiles with four points, Ryan 3, and Jackson 1, in the championship game.

The Rome-Floyd County Parks and Recreation 10U All-Stars won the District 5 title by defeating the BCRD all-stars 23-20 in a see-saw battle Saturday in Cartersville.

The Floyd all-stars opened the game with a 6-0 run but Bartow answered with a 4-0 run to close the first quarter down 6-4.

A 5-2 run by Floyd opened up some breathing room for the visiting team, giving them a 11-6 lead with a minute and a half remaining in the second frame.

Bartow answered with an 8-0 run and the local all-stars cruised into halftime with a 14-11 lead.
