Bartow County Board of Education member Larry Parker, who presides over Ward 5, announced his retirement effective Dec. 31 during Monday's Bartow County Board of Education meeting. Parker would have ended his 4-year-term in 2012.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Parker announced tonight he was going to send a letter to the governor for his resignation from the board so he can move on and pursue some other opportunities out there that he may have available," Superintendent John Harper said. "We're going to miss him, he's been a great employee and a great board member for this county."

Calls to Parker were not returned at press time.
