The last time Woodland’s wrestling team traveled to Macon, coach Adrian Tramutola was excited about the prospects of his Wildcats winning their second Class AAAAA state team dual championship in three years.

That was back in mid-January. Nearly a month after finishing second to Pope, Tramutola and his Wildcats are once again heading to Macon to participate in the GHSA traditional state wrestling tournament that will be held today through Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.

Pope will be the heavy favorite once again to win the Class AAAAA state title, with Woodland and Whitewater finishing a possible second or third. The Greyhounds have won four state titles, including the past two traditional championships.

“For me, I don’t see this tournament as Pope vs. Woodland,” Tramutola said. “I see it as more of a tournament that gives our seven wrestlers the opportunity to compete against the best wrestlers throughout the state. In essence, they are wrestling for Woodland and for themselves. How well they do is up to them.”

He and seven of his wrestlers will be joined by 12 other Bartow County wrestlers representing Cartersville, Adairsville and Cass. All 19 wrestlers qualified for state based on their performance at the school’s respective area sectionals held last weekend.
