For Blood Assurance, summer is a difficult time for collecting blood while United Way is in the process of helping provide school supplies for area residents.
The "Stock the Bus" campaign will collect school supplies Friday at the Cartersville Blood Assurance Donor Center, 921 B. Joe Frank Harris Parkway. Destined for less fortunate Bartow County children, the Blood Assurance Stock the Bus campaign invites donors to come out with school supplies and an open arm -- if they are willing and able to donate blood.
"Summertime is a tough time in terms of blood donations and we knew they were in a similar situation trying to collect school supplies and we wanted to get the word out in Cartersville that we're there and we're the blood provider for the hospital in that area," said Lacey Wilson, Blood Assurance public relations representative. "We thought this would be a good opportunity. If people want to come out and give blood, they can do that and we'll contribute a backpack in their name to the United Way. So it's a way to double your donation and help out two organizations at once."
Blood Assurance, the sole source of blood products for Cartersville Medical Center, will be accepting school supplies at the Blood Mobile parked outside the Cartersville Donor Center. In addition to hosting the school supply drive, Blood Assurance also will be donating a backpack to United Way of Bartow County for each blood donor giving on July 27.
"We're critically low on pretty much all [blood] types right now. Schools are out and we get about 16 percent of all our donations from high school students. So when they're out for the summer, that's fewer people that are donating plus people are on vacation and they're traveling. But we still have to have the blood should they need it in the hospital," Wilson said.
With capacity for four donors to give at once at the Cartersville donor center, Blood Assurance donors rarely have to wait. A recent addition to the local office is an Apple iPad on hand for use by donors to help pass the time with Internet browsing and apps.
The Cartersville donor center is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit www.bloodassurance.org or call 770-334-3261.
