After being discovered in a storage room, a burglar tried hiding in a dumpster.

According to the Cartersville Police Department incident report, the officer arrived at the Maybelle Street residence Sunday evening and met with the victim. The victim said he found a woman, later identified as Shannon Hartsfield, in a storage room attached to the residence’s garage.

When Hartsfield tried to flee, the victim grabbed her purse. Although Hartsfield got away, the victim still had her purse. Inside the purse was a Georgia driver’s license belonging to Hartsfield.

Two Cartersville officers searched the area and found Hartsfield behind a dumpster on South Dixie Avenue. According to the report, she was removed from the dumpster and arrested before being walked back to the Maybelle Street residence. Hartsfield reportedly said she had just been hiding in the storage building and did not steal anything. She also said the door was open.

The victim said numerous items in the building had been disturbed or were missing. Among the disturbed items was a freezer, which the victim said was missing half its items. According to the report, the victim planned to draw up a list of missing items at a later date.

Hartsfield was charged with burglary and transported to the Bartow County Jail without incident.
