Cane tennis teams defeat Sonoraville

The Cartersville girls and boys tennis teams both won their matches Wednesday to move to perfect 13-0 records in Region 5-AAA.

The teams now are to close finishing region play.

“We have one more region match today and it’s against Adairsville,” coach Melissa Moore said. “After that, we get a well-deserved vacation for about a week.”

She noted the girls will visit Adairsville for their matches while the boys will host Adairsville at Dellinger Park.

Against Sonoraville, the girls won 4-1 while the boys won 3-2.

In singles play, Darian DeFrench won, 6-0, 6-2; Maddi McGinnis won 6-3, 6-1; and Kendyll Westmoreland was decisioned at the No. 3 singles line, 6-1, 4-6, 5-7.

In doubles play, Charleston Fox and Annabeth Fox crushed their opposition, 6-0, 6-0, while Ali Norwood and Sarah Vaughan did the same, 6-0, 6-0.

The girls improved to 14-0 overall.

In boys singles play, Trevor Gotkowski overpowered his foe, 6-0, 6-0; Nathan Slocum lost, 1-6, 3-6; and Drew Adsit won 6-4, 6-0.

At the doubles line, Tyler Hill and Matthew Scott won, 6-3, 6-1, while Wyndham Laye and Avery Andrews fell, 1-6, 6-7.

Moore said the teams are continuing to focus on improving as the regular season winds down.

“The things that are working for the girls, their serves and downstrokes, are continuing to work for them,” Moore said. “The boys are continuing to improve their play especially at the net. Also, we’re very pleased with the progress our boys No. 2 doubles team is making.”

Today’s games are scheduled to start around 4:30 p.m.
