The tournament, formerly known as the Senior Sunbelt Classic, will be played June 20-25 in Oklahoma.
Along with Howard’s Team Georgia — which also includes Cass’ Dalton Weightman — other teams taking the field during the Heartland classic are Oklahoma, Arizona, Arkansas, Canada, Maryland, Ohio and Texas.
Howard’s addition to Team Georgia — a designation for the top senior and junior players in the state — comes as little surprise considering the mastery the Purple Hurricanes’ left-handed ace demonstrated on the hill during the 2011 season. The Georgia Southern commit polished off his career with a 7-1 record for Cartersville, submitting a 1.53 ERA in 59 1/3 innings with 87 strikeouts and just 22 walks, a ratio of more than four to one.
With Kendall Hawkins already chosen as a member of the Team Georgia junior all-stars, Howard’s selection is the second such recognition for Cartersville.
Hawkins and Cass’ Tyler Gates play in the 15th annual Junior Sunbelt Classic in McAlester, Okla., which is being held from Friday to Wednesday, June 15.
