When it was over, Westmoreland and Castillo prevailed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, Friday.
Their win not only gave the Lady Canes a 3-2 win over the Lady Eagles, but it also put an exclamation point on an undefeated regular season.
“I don’t know if a girls’ tennis team at Cartersville has ever gone undefeated before, I just know there was a lot of celebrating when we won that match,” coach Melissa Moore said. “It was a great win and a great regular season for this team.”
Heading into the final match, Excel’s top two singles’ players, Moriah and Miriam Hibbard, each won their matches.
Moriah Hibbard handed Darian DeFrench her first loss of the season, 6-5, 6-0. Miriam Hibbard downed Maddi McGinnis, 6-1, 6-2.
The Lady Eagles had a chance to go up 3-0 on Cartersville, but Hayley Landrum defeated Excel’s Calloway Ford, 6-4, 7-5, in a No. 3 singles match.
“Hayley was down in both sets, but she keep battling,” Moore said.
A do-or-die No. 2 doubles match was needed when the No. 1 doubles team of Cartersville’s Annabeth and Charleston Fox defeated Excel’s Taylor Vaughn and Caroline Moore, 6-1, 6-2.
“It was a great match as both teams played well,” Moore said.
For the Cartersville boys’ tennis team, it finished the regular season 15-2 with its 4-1 win over Excel.
Trevor Gotkowski easily won his No. 1 singles match, defeating Cade Archer, 6-0. Nathan Slocum defeated Sam Kirkland in a No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 6-2. In the final singles match, Drew Adsit won 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, over Simon Morris.
In doubles play, Tyler Hill and Matthew Scott defeated Excel’s Andrew Tyree and Stephen Barton, 6-4, 6-4.
The Eagles’ lone victory of the day came at No. 2 doubles, when Jake Newhouse and LaChaz Phillips defeated Cartersville’s Wyndham Laye and Avery Andrews, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.
“It was a great way to end the regular with teams winning,” Moore said. “Now it’s time to turn our attention to the region tournament.”
The two-day, Region 5-AAA tennis tournament begins Monday and will be played at Dellinger Park.
The Lady Canes, who are the No. 1 seed in their bracket, will play No. 8 seed Gordon Central Monday at 9 a.m.
Also playing at 9 a.m. Monday, will be the No. 1-seeded Cartersville boys’ tennis team who will play the No. 8 seed, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
Adairsville’s girls will be the No. 2 seed in the region tournament; the boys’ team wll be the fifth-seeded team.
