Woods allowed two earned runs over five innings while striking out four in keeping the Rockmart team off balance the entire game.
Woods also helped to spark the Canes' offense, driving in the first four runs with a grand slam. He drove in three more runs with his second home run of the game. Joe Jolly followed Woods with a solo shot.
Woods and Jolly along with Trenton Frazier led the Canes with three hits each. Boo Reed had two hits while Dustin Hanks, Bret Phinney, Hayden Siniard, Grant Tidwell and Parker Tidwell each had a hit in the 16-hit performance by the Canes.
The Canes captured the district title after winning Friday night's game in extra innings, 13-12.
After giving up six runs in the first two innings, the Canes battled back from the 6-1 deficit to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams exchanged runs in the third and fourth innings before Rockmart scored two in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-9 lead into the bottom of the sixth, only to see Cartersville battle back to tie the game with three runs on consecutive hits from Frazier, Reed, Phinney and Woods and a sacrifice fly from Joe Jolly to send the game into extra innings.
The Canes, behind the pitching of Parker Tidwell in the seventh inning, held Rockmart to no runs to set themselves up for the win in the bottom of the seventh. Tidwell led off the inning with a hit and went to second base on Dustin Hanks' drag bunt for a hit and then scored from second by beating the throw to the plate on Frazier's hit down the first base line to win the game.
The Canes were powered by Reed's home run and three-hit contribution along with three hits from Frazier and two hits apiece from Hanks, Phinney, Jolly and Grant Tidwell. Woods, Brandon Reaves, Tyler Darnell and Parker Tidwell each contributed a hit. Parker Tidwell got the win but was set up by a team effort in the pitching department from Hayden Siniard, Phinney, Frazier, Hanks and Darnell before Tidwell closed the door.
The Canes went 4-0 in pool play for the tournament, winning 14-0 and 11-1 against Cedartown and 14-4 and 12-11 against Rockmart, with a walkoff two-run home run by Siniard in the latter game. Each player contributed hits in the tournament and eight players hit home runs led by Woods with four, two each by Phinney, Frazier, Reed and Siniard, and one each by Hanks, Grant Tidwell and Joe Jolly.
The Canes were coming off their Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 Championship, where it was an all-Cartersville final with Cartersville teams taking the top three spots in the tournament. The 11/12 A beat the 11A team in the finals, 18-3, after beating both Rome and the 11A teams to get the finals. The only loses by any of the Cartersville teams were to other Cartersville teams as all three teams ran the tables against the rest of the competition from Rome, Bartow County and Dalton.
The 11/12 A team heads to Savannah this coming week to play in the GRPA state tournament and will head to Columbus in two weeks to play in the Little League state tournament.
