Fowler stepped back into the batter’s box when Brookwood’s catcher knocked the home plate umpire flat on his back during his failed attempt at making the putout.
“You never want to give the other team any additional outs,” said Cartersville coach Stuart Chester in reference to what happened on the very next pitch to his starting pitcher.
On the very next pitch, Fowler made the Broncos pay dearly for their defensive lapse.
His three-run home run over the left field fence came on an 0-2 count and accounted for Cartersville’s final offensive outburst in its 8-0 shutout of Brookwood Friday night at home.
The same home plate umpire, who had back surgery a few months earlier, watched Brandon Wells, JoJo Underwood and Fowler touch home plate.
“It’s always nice to see someone in our lineup hit a home run,” Chester said. “It’s also nice when you score a lot of runs on singles and doubles.”
