Meanwhile, the Lady Canes are gearing up for their venture into the playoffs when they host Lanier today at Dellinger Park at 4 p.m.
Oconee 3, Cartersville 1
Head coach Melissa Moore said Mitchell Scott was sidelined by the flu bug, and Tyler Hill, who normally plays the No. 3 slot, was moved into the No. 2 slot, while Jacob Hoyt competed at the No. 3 singles spot as the Canes, who play in Region 7-AAA, found 8-AAA's Oconee a rude host in the playoffs.
Hill fell 6-1, 6-0, while Hoyt was overpowered 6-0, 6-0.
Trevor Gotkowski won the team's only match of the evening, playing at his usual No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-0.
At the line 1 doubles position, seniors Will Garner and Jordan Eckert lost 1-6, 0-6.
Head coach Melissa Moore said the loss was disappointing but the Canes had a good season, earning a trip to the state playoffs.
"Overall we are proud of the boys. They were dedicated to each other and their play," she said. "But the spark was missing."
She said the team will miss its seniors -- Scott, Garner and Eckert -- next season.
"They've provided such leadership and humor for this team," Moore added. "We're definitely going to miss their leadership and their love of the game."
Lady Canes host Lanier
Coach Moore said the Lady Canes, the No. 2 seed from 7-AAA, have prepared for a tough outing today when Lanier, a No. 3 seed from 8-AAA, comes calling.
"We're looking for the girls to bring their top game," the coach said. "The girls are ready and pretty fired up and hoping to go further in the state playoffs."
She said the team has "high hopes" for today's matchup and coaches expect the best effort from their players.
"They will give us 100 percent today, and we're ready to see them play," Moore added. "Still, this will be the first time to compete at state for a number of our players."
Northwest 4, Cass 0
Northwest Whitfield's Seth Pierce scattered 5 hits over 7 innings and struck out 3 in taking a 4-0 victory over Cass in high school baseball Wednesday.
Diego Peralta reached base for the Bruins in the third with a single, stole second and went to third on a single by Brady Middleton. He scored on an error.
The Bruins did the rest of their damage in the fourth, when they scored 3 runs.
Connor Law led Cass offensively with 3 hits. Dalton Parham and Chaz Wilson got the Colonels' other two hits.
Cass threatened to score in the fifth when Sam Russell reached third after getting on base courtesy of a base on balls, moved to second through a sacrifice by Chris Morton, and advanced to third when a pitch hit Brandon Etheridge.
In the seventh frame, Law singled his way on, moved to second on a single by Wilson, then advanced to third on a ball hit into a double play.
Tyler Gates took the loss for Cass, giving up 4 runs -- 1 earned -- over 4 innings while allowing 7 hits.
Chris Morton worked 2 innings and gave up 0 runs while striking out 4.
The loss dropped Cass to 14-11 overall and 9-10 in Region 7-AAAA. Northwest Whitfield improved to improved to 14-11, 10-9.
Cass closes out its season on Friday, when it visits Creekview. The two teams are scheduled to meet at 5:55 p.m.
Game 1: Chattooga 12,
Tigers 4
In the first game of the region crossover matchup, Adairsville committed as many errors in the first two innings as it had during the three games of its recent win streak. Chattooga scored two runs each in the first and second innings to go up 4-0.
Further complicating matters for the Tigers, the offense faltered at the start of the game, needing two innings to record its first hit off of the Indians' Lance Gazaway.
However, in the bottom of the fourth, Adairsville resembled the team that entered the day averaging six runs per game in its last three ballgames. Trey Gulledge hit an RBI single to right-center field, Ross Kennedy dropped down a bunt to score a run, and Dylan Cochran's bunt on a squeeze play pulled the Tigers within one run, 4-3.
Unfortunately for the hosts, the momentum shifted swiftly when Chattooga responded with a five-run fifth. Wade Lanier, Trent Elsberry, Steiner Davis and Gazaway had run-scoring hits, and Austin Gentry's fielder's choice brought home the Indians' other run in the fifth as the visitors extended their lead to 9-3.
Three more runs poured in for Chattooga in the sixth as Gentry drew a bases-loaded walk followed a little later by RBI hits from Elsberry and Davis.
Adairsville's Tyler Washington led off the seventh with a single down the third-base line, and after advancing to second on Neal Knight's sacrifice bunt and then to third on a wild pitch, the Tiger leadoff hitter scored his team's final run of the game on Cody Kremer's grounder to second.
Washington was one of six Adairsville players with a hit, a list that also included Kremer, Tristin Smith, Gulledge, Kennedy and Cochran.
Pitchers for the Tigers were Gulledge, who started the game and pitched five innings, as well as Kennedy and Knight, who each pitched one inning.
