Visiting runners challenged course records and one of the host teams finished in third place Tuesday at the Cass-Cartersville Invitational held at Dellinger Park.

Pickens' Justin Weaver held the distinction as the only runner to break the 16-minute mark, winning the varsity boys' race with a time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds -- 10 seconds off the record.

Cartersville's Roger Herrera had the best local finish among the varsity boys, placing seventh to help his team -- which had 137 points -- to a third-place finish behind Harrison (83) and CCI champion Centennial (44).

Regarding other local teams, Woodland (202) finished seventh, Cass (441) 16th and Excel Christian (565) 19th.

Cameron Leonard of Woodland, who finished eighth with a 17:29, and Lawson Crowe of Cartersville, who ran a 17:57 for 18th place, also medaled along with Herrera.

In varsity girls' action, Cartersville's Lindsay Anderson -- whose team was seventh with 204 points -- was the top local girl with a time of 20:32.

Hannah Hood of Cass (21:27, 20th place) joined Anderson as a medalist.

Cass finished 11th (323) and Woodland 10th (292) as Centennial also won the varsity girls' championship.

Brooke Koblitz of Centennial won with an 18:57 -- 15 seconds shy of the record

Adairsville, which only competed in the junior varsity races, produced the highest-placer among local JV boys with Virgil Gentry's performance. Gentry ran an 18:42, good for sixth place.

As a team, Adairsville came in seventh with 371 points, a spot behind Cartersville -- which had 304 points -- and six spots away from JV boys' winner Centennial (49).

"They've gotten better every week," Adairsville boys' coach Curt Wallace said of his team, which performed its best at its biggest meet thus far. "It seems like they run harder, just because there's so many boys around them."

Wallace said everyone seemed to run a personal-best time, including Gentry, Christian Warren and Ryan Sexauer.

"Dellinger's a good place to run -- nice, flat course," he continued. "I was very proud of Virgil for finishing so high."

With so many Atlanta-area schools as well as much bigger northwest Georgia schools -- who had much bigger teams -- Adairsville's coach said his boys held up well.

"Anytime you beat any of those guys, you feel good," Wallace said. "It didn't mess with 'em, they went out and had a good race."

On the girls' JV side, Cartersville's Dorie Brunzelle went out and had herself a good race, crossing the finish line first among all local girls for fourth place in the race.

Brunzelle ran a 22:23 and Cartersville (180) also finished fourth, trailing only Dalton (166), Centennial (47) and winner Harrison (23).
