Canes lock up top seed

The North Murray baseball team outhit Cartersville 6-5 in the two teams’ final region game of the season.

However, it was the Canes who were able to bring home their baserunners, and as a result, they defeated North Murray by a score of 3-0 Tuesday to lock up the top seed in Region 5-AAA heading into the state tournament.

Cartersville scored two runs on two hits by Clifton Dempsey and Brent Arnold in the first inning.

The Canes would add another when Elliott Anderson singled and then scored on an error in the sixth.

Garrett Rutledge and Micah Smith combined to pitch seven shutout innings for Cartersville.

Rutledge pitched four innings, allowed four hits and struck out three batters.

Smith pitched the final three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three.

Riley Richards and Elliott Berrey added a hit each for Cartersville.

The Canes will play one final game before the playoffs begin, which will be at Turner Field Monday against West Forsyth.
