Cartersville’s hard-fought victory over the Thomson Bulldogs last Friday night not only set up tonight’s collison course with the Buford Wolves, it also marked a milestone in the rich history of the Purple Hurricanes.

The 21-13 win over the Bulldogs was the Purple Hurricanes’ 600th victory dating back to September 1909 when Cartersville High School played its first ever football game. A little more than 103 years later, the Canes overall record is 600-316-29.

Victory 601 would mark the first time the Canes will have ever defeated Buford. The Canes and Wolves have only met twice — the 2006 and 2007 seasons — with Buford winning both times.

Upon hearing about this historical achievement for the very first time, coach Frank Barden shared his thoughts about what victory 600 meant to him and to his players.

“To everybody associated with this high school and its football team, it is very humbling to know that you have been part of this rich tradition,” Barden said

The 13-win season thus far marks the most games won in one season by a Canes football team since 1999 when they went 15-0 and won the Class AA state championship.
