The Cartersville Canes 13 & Under All-Stars opened play with an awesome power display against Wills Park on July 2, winning 15-0 in a run-rule game.
On July 3, they won both games of their double header, defeating North Georgia 12-2 in their second run-rule game, and then Jefferson -- in their closest decision of the tournament -- 5-2. On Sunday, they whipped Ringgold 11-0 in their third run-ruled game of the tournament.
By staying on the top of the winner's bracket, the Canes were able to rest until 8 p.m. Monday, when they won the state title with an 8-4 decision over Jefferson.
The entire Canes team was honored with the tournament's MVP plaque. In usual Dizzy Dean standard, an MVP is announced for the tournament and it is typically one player. In this tournament, however, the entire Canes team was named as MVP due to their dominating victories, talent on the field and positive attitudes, officials said.
The majority of players on this team played in the semi-finals of the Little League State Championship last year and lost against Columbus.
Marvin Neal, head coach, said he is proud of how the youngsters played as a team throughout the tournament and said that had a bearing on the result.
"They deserved to get a state championship the way they played together," Neal said. "I want to thank all of the parents for their support. They have been wonderful. (The) players and parents represented Cartersville well (and I am) very proud to be part of this great group of kids."
