“We lose that game, and we are done,” said third-year coach Rick Holsomback, whose Lady Canes lost their first region playoff game 5-4 to Lafayette-Ft. Oglethorpe (LFO). “But our team knew what was at stake and responded to the challenge.”
Not bad for a softball team that did not win one single game during the 2010 season and was 10-10 last year. This year, Cartersville finished 13-11 overall, 9-6 in the region.
The win over the Lady Colts in the 5-AAA region playoffs sends them to Jefferson, where they will play the Jackson County Lady Panthers in a best-of-three series starting today at 4:30 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
If necessary, Cartersville will be back in Jefferson on Thursday to play a third and deciding game that is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Panthers, who are the Region 8-AAA champions, finished the 2012 season 17-15-1 overall, 5-2 in the region. Region 8-AAA is also the home of the Oconee County Lady Warriors, who are the defending Class AAA state champions.
