Cartersville scored four touchdowns in the first half and added a fifth in the second on its way to topping Ashworth 34-6 in middle school football action.

The Canes found the red zone on their first series, but their drive stalled at the 5-yard line, where the Canes missed a field goal attempt.

Ashworth ran three plays and lost 14 yards, then its punt was blocked by Cartersville’s Alex Corrigan and recovered by Nyvin Nelson at the Ashworth 2-yard line. Marcus Gary took the ball into the end zone on a sweep and Jonathon Cruz added the extra point with 2:09 left in the first quarter.

Cartersville held Ashworth to minus 7 yards the next drive, forcing a punt from the 38-yard line that was blocked by Marcus Gary and scooped up by Evan Williams and returned 30 yards for Cartersville’s second score. The PAT was missed and Cartersville led 13 - 0 with 7:38 remaining in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ashworth fumbled and Cartersville’s Dominique Williams recovered. Two plays later Gary scored from 28 yards out and Cruz tacked on the PAT to give Cartersville a 20-0 lead.

Cartersville’s defense held the next drive, and after an Ashworth punt, Trevor Lawrence threw a 35-yard TD pass to Williams. Cruz kicked his third PAT, increasing Cartersville’s lead to 27-0.

In the second half, Cartersville took over at the Ashworth 20 after a fumble was shaken loose by Bryce Wilkens and recovered by Jake Richards, setting the Canes up in scoring position.

Cartersville capitalized on the opportunity when the Canes hit Williams with a 20-yard pass. Cruz kicked the PAT and the Canes were up 34-0 with 4:52 showing in the third quarter.

Ashworth returned the kickoff 70 yards for its only score of the game. The PAT was blocked by Levi Pickel.

The Canes improved to 2-0 and next Thursday travel to Calhoun to face the 1-1 Calhoun Middle Yellow Jackets at 4:30 p.m.
