The Cartersville boys (29 points) finished ahead of Woodland (33), Gordon Central (85), Cass (112), Excel Christian Academy (153) and Temple (154).
"It was a back-and-forth kind of race," said Cartersville coach David Matherne. "We had Roger Herrera take the lead and then (lose) the lead."
Although Herrera led for two miles, he said, the Cartersville runner could not hold off the No. 1 runner from Woodland, Cameron Leonard, who set the course record with a time of 18 minutes, three seconds.
Herrera finished with an 18:26.
The two rival teams seemed to alternate spots all the way throughout the top 10, save for the No. 6 and No. 10 spots.
"We came back with (No. 3), they came back with (No. 4)," Matherne said. "It was kind of like that all the way through."
Finishing after Leonard and Herrera and also earning points for their team were: Zach Cravey, Cartersville, 18:55; Jordan Keene, 19:06, Woodland; Troy Hickom, Cartersville, 19:08; Lawson Crowe, Cartersville, 19:24; Will Broome, Woodland, 19:24; Logan Rempe, Woodland, 19:24; Tyler Bucher, Woodland, 19:56; and Richard Jennings, Cartersville, 20:02.
"We're just two evenly matched teams. They're well-coached," Matherne said of Woodland's boys team, which is coached by Rob Forbes. "It's been kind of fun to race against them. I was proud of the way our guys responded to the adversity."
While Cartersville's boys have competed in meets where they have finished in the top 10, Saturday's win at the Cartersville Classic broke a two-year dry spell.
"It's been awhile since we've won a meet," Matherne said. "I don't believe we've won a meet with boys varsity since 2008."
On the girls' side, Cass won the meet in only its second race of the season.
Cass scored 43 points to finish in front of Woodland (64), Cartersville (66) and Gordon Central (128).
"I thought my girls ran well (Saturday)," said Cass coach David Rawlins. "I was proud to see the two (top girls) running together, both Savannah (Casey) and Hannah (Hood). That really did well for the team score.
"The rest of the team came through ... most of them (were) in the top 10. I thought, overall, they ran the best they could."
Cass' Casey (22:53) and Hood (23:31) finished third and fourth in the girls meet behind Ashley Barrera, who set the course record with a 22:22 and earned Woodland its second individual win of the day.
Cartersville's Talitha Cherer placed fifth with a 24:07.
"Talitha Cherer ran a great race," Matherne said. "She looked strong the whole race."
Rounding out the top 10 for local girls were: Hallie Wachsmuth, Excel, 24:12; Kayla Shuler, Cass, 24:19; Amber Fuller, Woodland, 24:28; and Kyra Gore, Cartersville, 24:41.
"I was impressed with Cass' girls," Matherne said. "They're strong."
"Once again, it was close with us (and Woodland)," he added.
Cartersville's Hunter Myrick (20:13) and Dorie Brunzelle (23:26) won their respective junior varsity races.
The Cartersville boys won their JV meet with 22 points. Woodland had 39 for second place and Cass placed third with 106.
In the middle school meets, Cartersville's boys won the race with 43 points; North Cherokee had 44; Excel had 65; and North Cobb had 82.
Cartersville's girls also won their middle school race with 25 points, besting second-place North Cobb, who had 68.
The first Cartersville Classic seemed to get the seal of approval from runners.
"A lot of kids we're saying positive things about the course," Matherne said.
"I appreciate Tellus (for) allowing us to host our meet there, particularly Canty Smith and Steve Hickom," he continued. "On their end, they just really helped make it happen, helped us coordinate it and then I had a lot of parent volunteers. I thought we put on a first-rate meet."
