The Cartersville boys and girls high school tennis teams won their matches respectively against Dalton High School this week.

The girls won 4-1 following the winning return of Adrianne Green to the Lady Cane tennis team lineup Wednesday after the completion of her basketball season.

Green was a forward on the Cartersville girls basketball team, which lost Saturday to defending state champions Columbia in the Elite 8 round of the state playoffs. Green, who played at the No. 2 line for the tennis team, easily handled her opponent.

The boys had a much tougher time as they defeated Dalton, 3-2, having to step up their play because their No. 1 singles player, Trevor Gotkowski, still has not been cleared to play due to an elbow injury.

Mitchell Scott made a heroic comeback to clinch the winning point for the Canes in the third set tiebreaker after being down, 5-2.

Scoring for the Lady Canes in singles play were Maggie Dowling, who defeated Kara Pendley, 6-0, 6-0; Green, who bested Malaka Awad, 6-1, 6-1; and Mallory Walker, who handled Mary May Wilson, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, Megan Patton and Logan Bolen had an easy time against Kat Burger and Sydney Gaston, 6-1, 6-2. Sarah Vaughan and Maddie McGinnis challenged Katey Brooks and Bethaney Dewitt on behalf of the Lady Canes but fell 6-0, 0-6, 6-4.

In the boys singles matches, Michell Scott won 2-6, 6-1, 7-6; Brock Hufstettler defeated Price Puryear, 6-1, 6-1; and Will Garner overcame a game Nathan Bryant, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

In doubles play, Tyler Hill and Jordan Eckert fell 6-1, 6-3 to B.J. Rowland and Thomas Delay, while Jonathan McMurdo and Jacob Hoyt lost 6-1, 6-0 to Mitchell Wilson and P.K. Bhatyer.

In junior varsity boys play, Taylor Brown and Branson Tucker lost 8-0.

In JV girls singles play, Kady King fell to Rachel Bakker, 8-4, and Ashley Deal and Ali Norwood lost in JV doubles play to Kathryn Harbin/Rebekah Cannon, 8-6.

Cartersville travels to Murray County today to play.
