It took Bartow County deputies and Cartersville police to break up an out-of-control fight early Sunday morning at Cafe Sol, located at 118 South Morningside Drive.

Upon arriving on the scene to assist the county, a Cartersville officer said he observed about 200 people at the establishment. Joseph Penson III was arrested after attacking an officer. According to the officer's incident report, Penson was involved in a physical fight with another man and given several verbal commands to stop fighting as the officer pulled him away. The officer stated that Penson ignored the commands and punched him in the jaw with his fist. The officer suffered several abrasions to his arms and head, in addition to a swollen jaw. Penson was arrested and charged with fighting in a public place and obstruction of an officer. Ciarra Shunta Williams was also arrested after she yelled profanities at Bartow County deputies despite being warned to cease. She was charged with disorderly conduct and booked into the Bartow County jail.

Cops find marijuana in shoplifter's purse

A woman who stole several items from Dollar General also was charged with marijuana possession according to a Cartersville police report. An officer responded to the 104 Market Square Drive store Sunday evening in reference to a shoplifting in progress report. The store manager told the officer that a female, later identified as Dena Nichols, was observed in the store with an opened package of socks concealed in her purse. At the checkout counter the manager retrieved the socks from her purse and asked her to leave the store. Upon the officer's arrival, he was given permission to search Nichols' person where he found an unopened package of Bic lighters, false fingernails and nail glue, all identified as items belonging to Dollar General. During a further search, a small baggy containing a green leafy substance was found. Nichols was booked and charged with possession of marijuana and shoplifting; she later bonded out.

Couple arrested after altercation

A Cartersville couple was arrested Sunday night after Bartow County deputies responded to 1925 Cassville Road, Lot 25, in reference to a domestic altercation.

Cassey Abbott said that her husband Travis Abbott was outside grilling when she noticed him talking to several females. Abbott said she asked her husband several times who the women were but he ignored her. Abbott said they began to argue and she threw a stereo player off the porch, breaking it. She said the argument continued and her husband kicked her in the leg. Travis Abbott admitted to arguing with his wife, but said he never kicked her. The deputy observed the stereo lying in the front yard and a red mark on Cassey Abbott's leg. Mrs. Abbott was arrested for criminal trespass under the Family Violence Act and her husband was arrested for simple battery (FVA). Both were transported to the Bartow County jail.
