Going for its third straight sweep at the Bartow County Cross Country Championships, Woodland ran into a bit of a roadblock Tuesday at Manning Mill Park in Adairsville, as Cartersville's boys and girls reversed last year's order to win their respective meets.

In addition, Cartersville claimed the top two individual races with Lindsay Anderson winning the girls' meet for the second time in her four-year career and Roger Herrera taking the boys' top spot.

"I honestly couldn't expect anything better than what we did," said Cartersville coach David Matherne, who also saw his teams win the junior varsity boys' and girls' races behind first-place finishers Connor Layton and Dorie Brunzelle. "Every kid did the school proud."

"It was important to them," he continued. "We were overly excited because we knew it would be really close. ... It can often hinge on one runner, and I thought it would be a one-point or two-point swing either with boys and with the girls.

"We won a couple of those battles that were important."

Herrera, who had lost a lead to Woodland's Cameron Leonard at the Cartersville Classic Sept. 18, held on for the win this time around.

"I knew Roger had a chance," Matherne said. "He ran a perfect race. There aren't too many times you can say that, but ran the perfect race.

"Every single guy had to come up big, and they did."

A clock malfunction forced coaches to keep their own times Tuesday.

Matherne said Herrera came in at a time of 17 minutes, 52 seconds, followed by Zach Cravey (18:32, third), Lawson Crowe (19:05, fifth), Troy Hickom (19:07, sixth) and Hunter Myrick (19:38, 12th), who also scored points for Cartersville.

Other Cartersville boys were Richard Jennings (19:49, 17th) and Alex Vicente (19:56, 18th).

Anderson, who didn't run at her team's meet at Tellus Museum, unseated last year's champion, Ashley Barrera of Woodland, by running a 21:04.

"I thought Lindsay ran a brilliant race," Matherne said. "She was quite patient. It's a great way for her to go out her senior year."

"The rest of the pack did exactly what they needed to do. They got pretty aggressive in the woods," he continued. "The last mile they seemed to really own it. ... Lindsay was just sort of the cherry on top."

Behind Anderson were Cartersville's Talitha Cherer (23:48, fifth), Kyra Gore (23:50, sixth), Anna Ward (23:53, eighth), Elyse Hoganson (24:45, 12th), Chiara Grady (25:00, 13th) and Alex Everhart (25:31, 18th).

"These are very good times for us," Matherne added. "They caught fire today and lit up, not a single girl had a bad race. Not a single guy had a bad race."

Cass boys' coach Michael Durham felt his team ran a good race, too.

"We finished third, not too bad, not quite as well as we ran last week," Durham said. "We just got out a little slow at the mile (mark) ... but we ran pretty well. I was happy with it. A bunch of the kids ran their best race of the year.

"It was an exciting day. Having that many kids run their best times, you can't help but be happy for them."

Durham, whose team next races in the Cass-Cartersville Invitational at Dellinger Park on Oct. 5, said he expects a better race from his team with more teams -- 20 or so -- to push the runners.

"I think the big races tend to lead to better times for the kids because you have more kids to run with it," he said.

Cass' top five boys Tuesday were Edgar Victoria (19:32), James Gunnels (19:46), Kenneth McPherson (20:39), Jordan Morning (20:44) and Zach Klaus (21:13).

Its top five junior varsity boys were Stephen Hambrick (20:47), Allen Harris (21:16), Tommy Klaus (21:31), Collin Rediger (22:17) and Phuc Nguyen (23:45).

Below are team results and previous team winners from year's past. Not all teams had enough runners to field a team.
