Cartersville team seeks district title

Cartersville youths are competing for a district title in the 9/10A Little League tournament under way in Cedartown.

Cartersville, which won the pool play with a 3-0 record, began playing Rockmart, which was the runner-up team with a 2-1 record.

The best-of-three playoff concludes Thursday.

Meanwhile, five Cartersville teams claimed victories Monday in Little League play in Cedartown, officials reported.

In the 9-year-old division, Cartersville whipped Cedartown, 26-2.

In 9/10A, Cartersville outscored Cedartown, 17-7, while in 10/11, Cartersville handled Rockmart, 15-9.

In 11/12A, Cartersville was leading Rockmart 12-4 when the game was suspended after three innings.

In 11/12B, Cartersville slipped by Rockmart, 7-3.

In the Junior League, Cartersville claimed a 30-0 win over Cedartown in a game played in Rockmart.

In Little League Georgia District 1, 11/12-Year-Old B-Team Baseball Tournament on Saturday, Rockmart outscored Cartersville 9-7.

Leading the offensive attack for Cartersville were Lucas Cordell, 3-4 with a double; Corey Brown, 2-4; Israel Dover, 2-4 with a double; Cameron Simpson, 1-2 with a solo home run; Parker Roberson, 1-3, Thomas Gilbert, 1-3 with a double; Joseph Conway, 2-3; and Caleb Gridley, 1-2.

On Sunday, Cartersville defeated Rockmart 19-0 in four innings in a game ended by the 10-run rule.

Offensively, Lucas Cordell was 3-4 for Cartersville; Corey Brown was 2-2 with two home runs and two walks; Israel Dover, 4-4; Cameron Simpson, 3-4 with a hit batsman; Parker Roberson, 2-1 with a hit batsman; Thomas Gilbert, 1-3; Caleb Gridley, 1-3; Joseph Conway, 1-1, Zachary Blackmon, 1-1 with two walks.

Chet Taylor pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks before being relieved in the third inning at 35 pitches so he could be available for the possible championship game. Joseph Conway went 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk before being removed in the top of the fourth at 20 pitches so he could pitch later.

Zachary Blackmon went 1/3 inning, facing one batter with two outs in the top of the fourth. The batter flied out to the third baseman to end the game.

On Monday, Cartersville defeated Rockmart, 7-3.

For Cartersville, Corey Brown went 1-2; Israel Dover, 1-3 with a solo home run; Cameron Simpson, 1-3 with an inside-the-park home run; Caleb Gridley, 2-2 with a walk; Thomas Gilbert, 1-2 with one walk; Chet Taylor, 2-2.

Joseph Conway pitched one inning and was pulled at 20 pitches to be available for duty later; Corey Brown pitched four scoreless innings with four strikeouts, allowing one walk and two hits.
