Cass coach Chris Allen said the Lady Colonels had certain expectations coming into the tournament, which began Friday.
"We probably didn't play as well as we should have, but we came into the tournament with a set of expectations and now that it's over, we see some more things we need to focus on," Allen said. "We still got some work to do ... but that's why we schedule this one. We see a bunch of different teams (with) good pitching.
"It was very productive and beneficial."
Cass skunked Murray County, 11-0, on Friday before falling to Dade County, 7-1.
On Saturday, the Lady Colonels opened with a 7-3 loss to Harris County, but bounced back to win, 13-3.
They ended the day with a tie against the Lady Warriors.
Allen said he got some strong performances from his seniors, namely Samaria Curtis, Myra Russell and Jessica Fetzer.
"Good tournaments for our seniors," he said.
But other players got a chance to show their stuff as well, which should help the coaching staff as far as where to put certain players as the season wears on.
"All our girls got a chance," Allen said. "Everyone on the varsity roster got opportunities and got looks and that's going to make it easy for us to go forward."
The tournament, which Allen said had close to 21 teams at Jack Mattox Recreation Park in Ringgold, serves as a good tool for Cass, which plays in a tough Region 7A-AAAA along with Woodland, Northwest Whitfield, Rome and Sequoyah.
"We always talk about the strength of our region ... we know that we all qualified for state," he said referencing the four state tournament qualifiers from last season -- Woodland, Northwest, Sequoyah and the Lady Colonels.
"There's no slouch on our schedule," he added, noting that Rome fought Cass tough in a 13-7 defeat Thursday.
That's why tournaments like the LFO Invitational are important for the Lady Colonels, he said.
"We could go out and pretty much play scrimmage games, but that's not going to get us where we need to be," Allen continued. "It's a great learning experience ... it starts to prepare us for that tournament atmosphere."
Cass has two similar tournaments remaining on its schedule before the region tournament in October: Sept. 10-11 in a Douglas County tournament and Sept. 17-18 at the SCORE Tournament hosted by Gordon Lee.
Cass returns to the softball diamond Wednesday when it visits Cedartown.
