The Lady Colonels (2-1) scored their first goal 10 minutes into the contest off a shot by Mallory Hedden, with an assist by Audrey Nix. Nix then scored the game’s second goal in the 28th minute with an assist by Madison Scoggins, putting Cass up 2-0 at the break.
Hedden headed the ball into goal off a set piece with an assist by Scoggins in the 60th minute to give the Lady Colonels a 3-0 advantage. Cass scored the game’s final goal in the 70th minute off a throw-in from Charlotte Frady with the goal by Brienna Heaton.
“We seemed a little lackadaisical in the first few minutes but the girls seemed to come alive after we scored the first goal,” head coach Phil Phillips said.
Rebecca Strother and Rachel Jackson combined for the shutout.
Phillips said the defensive play of the Lady Colonels was a big factor in the shutout, too.
“Our defensive back line did a good job and we basically kept the ball on their half of the field the first half,” the coach said. “LaFayette made some adjustments in the second half and were able to get more shots on goal. Our defense kept them outside the box on their shots.”
Cass next plays against Cartersville on Friday. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
