Cass High accomplished the first phase of its goals for this tennis season Wednesday when both its boys and girls defeated Pickens, 5-0 and 4-1, respectively. The sub-region victories mean that the Colonels and Lady Colonels enter next week’sRegion 7-AAAAA Tournament as No. 2 seeds, which their coach said had been the goal throughout 2013.

“At the beginning of the season we had our goals. We kind of knew where we would stack up against some of the teams because we’ve played ’em before,” Cass coach Chris Allen said. “It’s exactly where we wanted to be -- so far, so good. We’re still on track for our goals.”

The Cass boys took all five matches against the Dragons, with Matt Moore a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles; Joey Johnson a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles; and Jeremy Coone a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Eric Dunlap and Kaleb McBrayer as well as the No. 2 doubles team of Brad DeLee and Jakob McBrayer helped the Colonels manage a successful sweep. Dunlap and Kaleb McBrayer won 6-4, 6-1, and DeLee and Jacob McBrayer were 7-5, 7-5 winners.

In girls action, the Lady Colonels powered past Pickens, winning four of five matches. Cass picked up two singles wins behind No. 2 Aleigh Beard (6-4, 6-1) and No. 3 Hannah Dunlap (6-1, 6-0) while Brianna Summers and Callie Dodd (7-2, 6-1) and Flower Nation and Morgan Mayton (6-0, 6-3) added another pair of wins in No. 1 and 2 doubles, respectively.

Cass’ boys and girls also were in action Tuesday as well, defeating LaFayette in a region crossover match.

The girls nipped the Lady Ramblers, 3-2. Cass’ Beard won 6-3, 7-5, and Dunlap claimed victory, too, with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Nation and Mayton gave the Lady Colonels another victory with a 6-1, 6-1 result in doubles.

As for Cass’ boys, it was another clean sweep as LaFayette failed to register a win. Moore polished off a 6-2, 6-0 victory; Johnson won 6-1, 6-2; Coone prevailed 6-3, 6-3; Eric Dunlap and Kaleb McBrayer were 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 victors; and, DeLee and Jakob McBrayer exited court 7-5, 6-0 winners.
