Cass changed its defensive strategy, switching to one setter, and that move was credited by the Lady Colonels coach with netting two big wins Tuesday night as the team tripled its victory total.

Cass defeated Therrell and Cedartown and squared its area record to 2-2 on the season in high school volleyball action.

Cass overpowered Therrell, 25-16 and 25-9, in two sets for the first win.

Cedartown proved a stronger challenge as the Lady Bulldogs won the first set, 25-21. Cass roared back, 25-22, 27-25, to take the game.

Head coach Alicen Webster credited the defensive change with leading to the victories but said the team also had an improved attitude that helped.

She said Lacy Furrow, the team’s junior setter, helped lead the team to its first victory against Therell.

“She placed all her serves where we asked her to,” Webster said. “She is one of the team’s leaders who held us together.”

The battle with Cedartown was carried by Janee Callahan and Ashanti Solomon.

“Janee was very aggressive on the front row, blocking and hitting for us,” she said. “We were behind and Ashanti served and caught us up.”

She credited both seniors with helping Cass overcome that loss in the first set as well as improved serving.

“I think we missed five serves in the first set and only two the other two. We were focused a little more when they served and that helped.”

Webster said the two wins were the team’s second and third of the season and her team was in a celebratory mood.

“They said that was fun,” she said. “They were together as a team and they just wanted to be out there. Their mindset was completely different from previous games. They were more positive and better as a team, cheering each other on and communicating better during play.”

The Lady Colonels’ first win was in August against Murray County.

Cass will play two more area games later this month.
