A native of Bartow County, Mr. Abernathy was born Dec. 1, 1930, and was the son of the late Rev. Luther Abernathy and the late Bertha Porter Abernathy. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force and was retired from General Electric in Rome.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Michael Abernathy and wife, Shirley of Cartersville, Rev. Rocky Abernathy and wife, Mary of Kingston and Keith Abernathy of Guntersville, Ala.; his grandchildren, Michael Jr. (Clay) and Natalie Abernathy, Christy and James McDonald, Carlos and Melissa Abernathy, Michelle and Brent Lane, Mandie and Keith Robinson, Joshua and Jennifer Abernathy, Matthew and Lisa Abernathy, Mark Abernathy, Rebecca and Aaron Clark; 15 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters-in-law, B.T. and Julie Abernathy of Kingston and Rawlin and Margaret Abernathy of Cartersville; and his children's mother, Jean Abner of Center, Ala.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Creekside Fellowship Church on Old Alabama Road, Cartersville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Creekside Fellowship Church with Rev. Michael Abernathy and Rev. Rocky Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow in the Kingston Cemetery.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church on Friday at 12:15 p.m. and will include: Michael (Clay) Abernathy Jr., Carlos, Joshua, Matt and Mark Abernathy, Aaron Clark, Brent Lane, Keith Robinson, Michael C. Abernathy III and James McDonald.
